Cloudy or milky water in a new aquarium—or after certain changes—is often from bacterial or organic blooms, especially if substrate wasn’t rinsed well, or after adding fish or food. It’s not necessarily harmful if water chemistry is monitored.

Experts generally agree that it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the biological filter to establish in a brand-new tank, during which time you’ll see fluctuations in water clarity, ammonia, and nitrite.

In established tanks, even small ammonia readings are risky. The safe goal is 0 ppm ammonia. In new tank setups, some spikes are expected, but sustained elevated levels lead to stress or disease.
